there has to be a way to make this editable by the community, with more information about what specifically is and is not allowed.

This map if also very bias towards earthships only, there are literally hundreds of counties not listed that allow cob, strawbale, earthbag, adobe and other carbon zero natural buildings, we must keep this realistic earthships are not the only way to go regardless how groovy they are.

Wow. First off, I'm pleasantly surprised to see that you guys got info on PA. No joke, I was literally gonna start calling different counties this week (might do it anyway to get more specifics). Secondly, I AM VERY SURPRISED TO SEE ALLEGHENY COUNTY LISTED AS A POCKET OF FREEDOM!!! I live in Pittsburgh and can't help but think there may be some problems within the city limits but nonetheless, this is incredibly encouraging. Many Thanks to whoever got this info to the earthship folks.

hey i was just wondering if these pockets of freedom are free in a sense that i could live off the land in a tent, please write me back i'm dying to get out

now, the "not free" red land.... are they not to be fought for? isnt it true if one stands up, the rest will follow? if one earthship makes it, more will fight? i dont know, but i live in southwest florida, and i think there are LOTS of people here that would fight for it.

Douglas County in MO, I was informed is Green.

I'm doing it in a Cab-over camper. Tenting it might be a little too rough. Search the web for free campers, 5th wheel travel trails and trailers. From what I can tell most places want to tax you. So if you build it they tax you more for place...So why tell them you built something? Unfortunately if you go to sell you'll have to do it on owner terms because when the new buyer goes for a lone you'll be snitched on.

Also I think earthships have a hard time taking off is because they look at what kind of tax revenues they might receive from it. Like if you can't afford to pay the water bill can they take your house away or tax you for electricity. Not only that you'll have to work less to survive in an earthship and they will be thinking. Were loosing money no one is paying gas tax to get to work.

Earthships don't fit into conventional loans. They are not conventional in too many ways to list. Zack makes a good point about their resistance to fit in because of the govenment's demand for taxes. I would like to say that earthships can be good for the economy. If I lived in a house that was paid for and had no utility bills I would spend my money on other things. I would be shopping more, there for paying more sales tax and increasing other businesses revenues. I would still have a job and a car and would still be paying gas tax and federal income tax. I feel the people of the USA and the rest of the world would agree with me. Give us the freedom to decide where and how to spend our money and we will consume and stimulate economic growth. When people have money they spend money. The feds get their taxes and the people are happy. And when it comes to the water and power authorities just tell them to F**K OFF, I have my freedoms and the power to choose if I want or need their services.

Is there any information or ideas on to whom to talk to in Canada to find out where its "friendly" to potentially build on?

It took less than 2 weeks for us to get building permit for our earthship in Uintah County, Utah in 1996. I don't think things have changed here too much. Of course being a structural engineer helped. Having the help of a structural engineer may speed the process up in many places.

Wilbarger County Texas is a "Free" zone

Please keep in mind that many of these counties are NOT "not green" but rather have strict building codes to ensure safety standards at met. I am looking at 6 counties (marked red) that I know of in Oregon where Earthship homes absolutely are legal to build and own with the caveat that certified builders and plans examiners as well as licensed plumbing and electrical tradespersons are a part of construction ... as well as adherence to the building codes governing construction safeguards. By the way - Stone County in Missouri is certainly a "Free" zone ... it has no building codes (spookey but a fact nonetheless).

Uintah County, Utah. I received a call this week from a person wanting to build a straw bale house. The county building official only requires a professional Engineer's stamp here. Great place to live.

My interpretation along with a city manager in Texas believes as of September 1, 2010 all of Texas outside city limits are Pockets of Freedom. One may assume the more populated counties have adopted some sort of codes, but most are FREE!

Please define Green and Red! What questions does one ask the county to find out if an earthship can be built or not? Please publish the questions that have been used to make this map. What codes need to be put in place to turn a county from red to green? Please publish earthship-friendly building codes and let local activists work on changing the rules.

So does any one know of any free land in canada?? or if there are any pockets of freedom?

I just bought 2.5 acres in Siskiyou County, California and was really elated to see that Siskiyou County is GREEN on the map! Makes me hopeful. I do know they will make me build a septic system and they don't allow "water hauling" or composting toilets. I know that a way can be found to make the best earthship California will allow...I do believe there are no earthships in caifornia at this time and Siskiyu county is perfect for development there. Land is cheap and rural but close to small towns and you can get anything you need nearby. will keep updating. Anybody have any info about this area or california permits???
